Utah’s Great Salt Lake is the largest remnant of a huge inland sea that once covered much of western Utah and extended into Nevada and Idaho. Signs of this prehistoric body of water can be found in the white tufa-like formations and shoreline “bathtub rings” spotted throughout the West Desert. This sea has advanced and contracted for over 100,000 years and is now in a prolonged drought cycle. With its wealth of bird life, frequent storms, varied islands, history of human activity, and gorgeous sunsets, the Great Salt Lake makes for a fascinating photographic study.
